Event updates:

Great Indoors is this weekend! https://great-indoors.co.uk/event

On to club news:

First Thursday from 6.30 at the Imperial.

Going well no changes but we welcome your feedback.

Third Sunday at the Beer in Hand

Change of time to 3pm to 9pm to match pub opening times. Going well with an overlap to Thursday nights but some different faces too.

Saturdays:

August 26th and Saturday 23rd. 11am to 11pm.All day game sessions at the Imperial. Similar to the mega charity day but much more informal. There might be a surprise large game or side attraction for those that want to but generally just a chance to sit and play some of the longer games.

Mega Charity day

I am already planning the mega annual charity day for 2018 it will be May again for Herefordshire Mind unless we get any strong objections. I will be looking for volunteers to help me put up posters, drum up prizes, prep the venue, teach games and advertise the event on social media. If you are interesting please let me know now. I want to start organising sooner so we can pace ourselves.

At or around our Birthday in July 2018 we will vote for a new charity of the year for 2018-2019. I am using our Birthday as the Charity anniversary rather than the calendar year as it allows for simpler organisation.

Our logo the origin story. (Happy Birthday to us)

Today is the first anniversary of the first HB branded meeting, so we are sort of one year old today, despite having run 2 Charity game days and having an online presence via Facebook for 2 years.

On the 6th March 2017, whilst on a work conference call, the image of the letter H and B imposed on dice popped into my head. I had been non seriously day dreaming about a logo for the group but hadn’t spent any real time on it.

This was what I doodled and sent around the core group. And yes that is my best handwriting…

Our logo the origin story.

With in a few hours we  had what would turn out to be an image very close to the final one.

Over the next week or two we swapped the font and made very minor tweaks including  the 3 lions of Herefordshire becoming a bull and then a different but more Hereford Bull. Below is a rough time line of the changes. We discussed more traditional styles, modern and heraldic. We settled on modern  clean heraldry, to  use the logo and bold images to get what we do and where we are from across. We didn’t want ‘traditional / old fashioned’ heraldry as didn’t want to seem to old / boring or fuddy duddy…..

I think the logo looks awesome, and very striking on our Tshirts.

The HB crew!

The timeline

The shield idea was quickly voted in over just the dice.

The concept of clean / modern Heradlry was also voted in.

Super rapid mock up. (within an hour I think)

Mock up without the rejected blue!

Draft art work swapped for better art work.

Stronger banner to add definition

The colours were locked in and the softening of the dice really were the finishing touches. The dice corners was one of the times where you stare at a screen and know something wrong but can’t place it.  Instantly the softer corners ‘finished’ the logo. (only casino dice are hard edged I think)

The final logo. The Lions didn’t print or embroider too well so were swapped for a simpler cow, and then another more Hereford cow. Lines softened and general small touches

With much softer lines, It looks great on black and green and stands out well at a distance.  Overall very similar to my original drawing, not just because I’m a dick / dictator, the group had a long chat about it and we went though other versions and colours we just settled on this version.

Happy Birthday Hereford Board Gamers!!

It’s nearly our first official birthday as Herefordshire Board Gamers.  We’ve existed for two years on Facebook and  we have run three, annual charity days.

It’s been an amazing year. We’ve met over 16 times officially with several ad hoc sessions (here is a list of what we played on each session) and we’ve also had the largest and most profitable charity day yet. 48 players playing over 28 games.

I’m extremely proud of what we’ve created. We have well over 110 members, an active and supportive Facebook group, new friendships have been made,  and are we are well on the way to having a full and active gaming community in Herefordshire.  I am amazed and thankful for the support and enthusiasm from our members, without whom the group would be nothing.

As always I welcome your feedback and want this group to be a community, to support gamers and gaming the clubs in the area.

We also have 4 flags, a shield and a lizard!

What is next? Keeping doing what we do well. Play games and have fun

  • Continue to run monthly game days on Thursdays and Sundays.
  • Run 3 weekend long gaming sessions (10am  to late). Relaxed gaming with no fuss. (Small suggested donation to charity to enter)
  • 1 charity day to raise money and awareness for our chosen charity. This also serves as a recruitment drive for us as well. I will need all your help on this
  • Continue £1 per night donation to play.  We have minimal costs and have been breaking even but a small reserve is handy to pay for snacks, help support the costs or cover any incidents. This is the same basic format as last year, tweaking and improving things as needed. Costs for the charity day (printing etc) the flags and lizard were member donations.

What’s next? Grow the community and give back

With the groups’ blessing and support I would like to give something back to the wider community, by taking and teaching games into communities where they might help. Also there is the possibility to look for sponsorship for the club, if only to assist us with gathering prizes for our charity day and fundraising.

These two items I definitely need to hear the clubs views on. I’ve formed them into complete questions below with some supporting information.

1) Step up our community activities. Just a few days a year perhaps teaching or taking games into other community groups? (This is in addition to our fund raising charity day and totally voluntary and opt in.)

2) Do we form legally as a club? This would allow us to attract grants to help with point 1. (There would be slightly more work for the committee no other effort needed for other members)

3) Do we try and attract sponsorship? This would help us raise prizes and therefore funds for our charity day and cover some basic costs, web hosting, posters. (In reality we have our regular supporters who have donated to several charity days it could just be formalising this relationship.)

4) Do we continue to charge a suggested £1 fee for games nights? There is no room fee at either venue and we only currently charge on Thursday nights. (This money would be used to cover other incidental costs, or for reinvestment into club things.)

What can the group do to help me?

Please join the newsletter. I want another method to communicate dates rather than solely relying on Facebook.

Continue to give me feedback, suggestions, volunteer to help, write blogs or even suggest and lead projects.

Hopefully we’ll see you all at our birthday party on 6th July
